Left to right: Butterknife, Round Punch, Blunt Chisel

Butterknife
High-quality, heat-treated steel chisel, 1/2” shaft, made in the U.S.A.
Custom-ground radius and point.

The Butterknife is used to remove fixed heads and deadheads. Tap the point of the Butterknife into a fixed blob of copper or aluminum, such that the point has a good bite, and then tap the side of the end of the Butterknife towards the rock, to use leverage to pry out the blob, with the radius of the Butterknife acting as the fulcrum. The Butterknife can also be used as a chisel, to scrape out any remaining bits of metal from a clogged placement. Once all of the metal has been removed, using a wire brush and a blowtube to finish the cleaning process is recommended, before placing a new head.

1/4” Round Punch
High-quality, heat-treated steel punch, 5/8” shaft, made in the U.S.A.
Used to place #2-size and larger heads.

5/8” Blunt Chisel
High-quality, heat-treated steel chisel, 5/8” shaft, made in the U.S.A.
Used to place #1-size and larger heads.

A 3/32” (#2-size) galvanized aircraft cable wrist loop is attached to the Butterknife, punch, and chisel, and is looped around a smooth, lathe-cut groove. The cable is covered with 1/4” black PVC tubing and the zinc-plated copper sleeves are covered with red PVC heat-shrink, for a smooth and comfortable feel. The tools are wrapped with black athletic cloth tape, for comfort and improved grip.

Funkness Device

Made of beefy 5/32” (#4-size) galvanized aircraft cable, with flexible, black PVC tubing.
Zinc-plated copper oval sleeves are covered with two layers of PVC heat-shrink tubing, for durability and a smooth feel. 20.5” overall length
Used in conjunction with a climbing hammer to assist in cleaning stubborn pitons, especially in expanding placements. Using a Funkness Device to clean heads is not recommended, as it can result in damage to the rock, and degradation of future placements.

Blowtube

3/8” flexible, clear PVC tubing and 1/4” stiff, white polyethylene tubing.
26” overall length, with 18” 3mm perlon leash and clip-in loop.
Used for removing rock dust from 1/4” and larger diameter holes during bolt placement, as well as for use in conjunction with a wire brush for cleaning out head placements.

Wire Brush

Stainless steel bristles, black plastic handle, made in the U.S.A.
Handle is wrapped with black athletic cloth tape for improved grip. Includes 3mm perlon clip-in loop.
Used for cleaning out shallow cracks and grooves for the best possible head placements. Using a blowtube in conjunction with a wire brush is recommended.
